GROWING CORN IN YOUR LOS ANGELES BACKYARD

🌻 USDA ZONE 10A 🌻

I cleared the plot where my corn will grow,  amended the soil with plenty of compost, and let the micro-organisms get to work. After some rain, I planted 4 rows 1 foot apart, creating a “block” of corn. I ran a hose from the upper backyard down to the lower portion. Once the seeds sprouted and were at least 4 inches tall, I side dressed the plants with a high Nitrogen fertilizer. I also built a small fence, after a coyote dragged his kill through my plot and unknowingly damaged half my seedlings. Once silks formed on the ears, I fertilized once a week, and hand pollinated the silks to ensure even cob development.
